József Csáto
Overview – CV – Exhibitions
József Csató’s work (1980) blends abstraction and figuration in a constant play of deconstruction and construction, where chaos and harmony intertwine. His creative approach is intuitive, using both acrylic and oil to explore the fluidity of forms and pareidolia, creating figures that emerge spontaneously. Influenced by concepts like chronos and kairos from Greek time, Csató advocates for imagination and play as means of expression. His works, full of humor and philosophical reflection, explore the relationship with time, nature, and contemporary chaos. Through his fragmented compositions, Csató invites us to question our perception of the world and the passage of time.
József Csató lives and works in Budapest, Hungary. He completed his studies in the painting department at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts under Dóra Maurer in 2006. He has received the Gyula Derkovits Scholarship three times and won the Esterházy Art Award in 2013, a national award for Hungarian artists. Csató also completed an artist residency at the Krinzinger Gallery AIR program in 2017. He has held solo exhibitions at galleries such as Double Q Gallery, Hong Kong; Sean Horton, New York; PLUS-ONE Gallery, Belgium (2022); Semiose Gallery, France (2021); and Galleri Urbane, Dallas, USA (2021). His works can be found in many private and institutional collections, including the Ludwig Museum, the Hungarian National Bank, and Beth Rudin DeWoody.
