While the horse was drinking and the hare was still, on the surrounding plains, in the
distant forests and beyond the mountains,
on the quiet beaches of this uninhabited world,
or this silently inhabited world,
all of this was happening.
Like souls, they revealed themselves
and then all the colours that were already there became apparent:
See this brightness, and how it seems to sway as it moves.
See this beautiful, delicate blade of grass, peeping out the flower as if it wished to say “hello”
or give an elegant wave.
See this moment, implying that the sky is beneath you and the ground above,
displacing you from your centre and turning you upside down.
And this little tongue, sucking up what looks like a dizzying concoction.
And this moment
when a flash of light shoots from your body,
hypnotising everything around you and making you disappear.
See this smell that rocks us from side to side,
a sweet smell that seems as if it will last forever.
Or this sound, as if someone were singing, trapped in the song where they have chosen
to stay forever.
I haven’t seen a single being that wants to stop and talk to me. The creatures I meet
along the way behave differently when they notice my presence.
Why do you say that?
Because sometimes, when for a few seconds I manage to disappear or dissolve,
I can see them just standing there.
But the moment the flow of time starts up again, everything changes
in an instant and stillness is thwarted.
Yet you leaned over the water and observed your reflection for a long time because
the water was still.
You see, I felt like the person floating there and I weren’t really the same person. And when I wanted
to question my reflection about this, the water trembled and my face became unrecognisable.
Look at those glassy seas: they seem solid and impassable. They are still
inhabited.
Look at the unmoving surface of those lakes. If you listen closely, you will hear what stirs
beneath. You will see a vast tempest on a tiny scale.
See how everything moves as you move through everything.
How a universe springs up from this source every morning.
See how it surrounds us, welcoming us and inviting us to take shelter forever.
See how this miraculousness is present among us,
all you have to do is place yourself in the moment and the position from where you are looking.
